Month-end closing: freeze a defensible version
Month-end close is a controlled transition from open to soft close for authorised entries, then hard lock and certificate on a defined trial-balance version. Cut-off, subledger close, entries, tie, account substantiation and post-entry flux analysis precede lock. Recurring, estimate, correction and reversal entries differ in evidence and aftermath. Flux is a signal returning to populations and contracts, not source evidence. Monthly close does not mean manually zeroing nominal accounts; annual function depends on system and policy. If a locked period changes, reopening defines event, scope, time, authority and tasks, then withdraws old version, issues new and proves relock and distribution.
